I know you are confused and curious to know what is the difference between the modem and a router?

Well, No need to worry here I will explain to you in detail. When you use or access the internet then both Modem and Router work together in order to allow you with internet access.

Nowadays it has become very easy to use the internet but a few years ago we were likely to use both modem and router to use the internet in a complex manner compared to the present. For easy understanding, let’s take a short example, The modem is a door that connects the Internet to us from the ISP (Internet Service Provider) or helps us to access the internet to our home and the function of the router is provide or access the internet that is coming from ISP through modem router allows connecting that internet to all the devices which use or can connect to the internet in our house so that we can use the internet in all devices using a router.

Modem and Routers have gone under huge changes from year to year such as now the modem and router are available in one box with their features, now the router has a feature of Wi-Fi, also the technology has become very good in connectivity.

I recommend you to use separate modem and router because modem technology changes slowly in other side router technology is changing faster compared with a modem you can use a modem for a long period of time while you might have to change router because of more devices to connect or for faster connectivity with the latest router with upgraded technology.

What is a Modem?

Modem

The modem’s job is to Modulate and Demodulate the signal. Let’s understand this process in a short and easy way. Actually, It converts or translates the analog signal into digital signal so further it reaches to your computer or router as your computer or router can’t decode analog signal which is coming via phone line cable, coaxial cables, or different types of wiring cable from your ISP.

What’s the need of Modem

The modem is a very essential device when you want to get connectivity of the internet from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), it works as a translator that translates analog signals to digital. Does the question arise why direct digital signals can come from ISP, then no need to convert it from analog to digital? Because wired cable can only allow flowing analog signals from it that’s why it circulates the analog signal city to the city fastly. In short, it understands only analog language (signals) as your computer understands digital signal or digital language. That’s the main reason behind the need for Modem for Internet connectivity.

How Modem Works

Usually, Modem has several lights or LED’s that show you the different functions of the modem to see if those functions are working properly or not. First Blinking light indicates that modem is receiving power from a power source, another LED indicates that it is receiving data from your internet service provider (ISP), another one indicates that it throws data (Internet) successfully to your device. From these indications, you can easily troubleshoot the technical problem in the modem.

Also, the modem has two primary ports one is for taking connectivity from ISP another port is for throwing the digital signals or Internet connectivity to your device. Ports of the modem are based on the modem and its features accordingly usually it can connect through physical coaxial cable, telephone landline cable. If you want to check the original internet speed of your service pack that you have taken from ISP, you can directly connect your computer to the modem through Ethernet cable and run a speed test on your computer then compare that internet speed to your selected internet package you have taken from your ISP.

What is a Router?

router

Basically Router is a networking device that routes the signals or serves the Internet to your Internet-enabled devices such as Mobile Phones, Computer, Desktop, Laptop, etc. The router makes a network so that multiple devices communicate or connect with each other It allows devices to use the internet which comes from the modem.

Routers basically are of two types one is wired and one is wireless (Wi-Fi) with the wired router it needs a physical cable to connect or make a bridge over between a modem and the devices which use the internet.

Wireless routers inbuilt antennas can have router wi-fi enabled but they also need to connect to modem through a physical wire in order to make connectivity from the internet which comes from ISP.

How Router Works

The router has its unique work to do to access the internet we usually have many internet-enabled devices in our home for this only a single modem can’t make a network or establish communication between multiple devices modem can only communicate with a single device that is the major role of the router also it manages traffic and make the balance of traffic amongst the devices by providing devices a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address to divide each device with their MAC address and it makes sure that correct data/information is sent to correct device.

To understand it better let’s take a short example if you searched a query on search engine ‘What is Apple?’ by your Mobile Phone, the router makes sure that this information is received by your Mobile, not other devices which are also connected to the network.

The router also has a security feature which Modem doesn’t have you can assign a password to your router to protect your network from hackers or unrecognized devices, also set a firewall, bandwidth, or you can also restrict a single device by blocking their MAC (Media Access Control) address to disabled access the internet for that specific device, you can also restrict a specific or multiple websites for being accessible in your router’s network and much more features are there, you can configure these settings all by one click in router’s setting feature.

Modem Router

Depends on the Modem and its connectivity feature for Internet connectivity
Can provide internet to several devices
Decode Signals from ISP (Internet Service Provider)
Can't Decode Signals from ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Can connect directly to Internet or access the internet directly through Modem

Can’t connect directly to Internet or access the internet directly through Modem

Can’t make a local network
Can make or create a local network

Doesn't needs a Modem to access to the internet
Needs a Modem to access to the internet
Doesn’t have Wi-fi access in ModemHave Wi-fi feature in Router
